Detail: Grants and Claims The early history of Maine was one of contention between multiple claimants to the land. Settlers, the Massachusetts government, and holders of large grants fought in and out of court. By the end of the eighteenth century, American Indians and settlers no longer fought in the Kennebec region, but as settlers moved inland from the coast, many American Indians were pushed north, while others stayed and integrated into the white culture. Some tribes persisted, and American Indians still populate Maine today. |
