Q: What Was Laudanum? A: Opium. Evidence:
Lewis, William. Many eighteenth-century doctors had books called dispensatories that described the properties and preparation of medicinal materials. Using the recipes, doctors and pharmacists concocted medicines to sell. In Martha Ballard's lifetime, opium and its derivative laudanum were unregulated. Anyone could buy them. Opium and laudanum were staples of western medicine. They were used to induce relaxation and sleep, kill pain, calm babies, and combat the fatal effects of dysentery.
