Martha Ballard's Diary, August 29 - September 2, 1799

Cloudy, raind aftern. mr Ballard Surveying for mr Whitwell. I have Cleand out the Spring and done other matters about house. Hepsy washt, Cyrus Brot water and went to mr [Carters], Bot 2 lb Butter @ /10 and 2 lb Suger @ 1/2_. at home, Cleand spring.

Clear Except a light Shower. mr Ballard and Cyrus went to Jon as but returnd. mr Ballard had a fit of the Collic. Hepsy has been to See Dagt Lambard, finds her as well as Shee has been; to mr Childs finds them very poorly. Allin Lambd Came home with Hepsy. at home.

Clear. I was Calld at 9h morn to mr Childs, his wife and inft being Sick. I tarried there till 9h Evn, was then Calld to See mrss Hill who was in Labour. mr Ballard and Cyrus up to the farm. at mr Childs and mr Hills.

X. Birth mr Hills Son. XX.
Cloudy and Some rain. mrss Hill was Safe Deld at 2h 30m this morn of a Son, her Second Child. I left them as well as Could be Expected at 5, wrode to the fort, Came from there by water. went to bed and Slept, then rose and attended Public worship and the ordinanc of the Super. I went to mr Childs at intermition, find the Dear little Babe alive and in Distress. may God Deal with it in mercy and prepare all Concerned for his holy will. I Calld at Son Lambds, they are as well as they have been. my Son has Seen 27 years this day. the text foren Thesns [v] C 8.9 verss; aftern Math XI C 28:29:30 [Ver]. at mr Hills. Birth 39th. [recd] 9/ as a rd. at mr Childs & at Son Lambds. he is 27 [yrs] Old ys [day].

Clear. mr Ballard went to Son Jonas forenn, Cyrus to Pittstn to See a Vesel Launched, Hepsy to work for Daugt Lambd. Allin Came home with her. I have been at home, Done my hous work, Swept all the rooms and Sellar and Chambers. mr Atkins here, desired Me to be in readiness to wait on his wife very soon. I am informd that the infant of mr Child Expired at 5h morn, its remains to be interd tomorrow at 3h pm. at home. mr Child infant Expired. Dagt Lambd [is] 27 years old this day.
